![]() Oh no, the fame has changed him! It's all downhill from here! Except. Same thing with the scene directly before, where he accuses JP, his brother, of sleeping with his wife. When RdN lashes out at his wife and slaps and beats her, that is supposed to represent a turning point in their relationship. The other major problem, related to the previous one, is with the pivotal scenes of the movie. FFS, in the scene after the beating when he's apologizing to his wife, the acting is so bad I'd swear RdN was talking to a mannequin. I completely disagree that this is Robert deNiro's or Joe Pesci's finest work and find the very same scenes that other people seem to find moving (e.g., the beating scene, the final argument with Pesci) to be emotionally dull. But the acting is so wooden and so stilted that I never believe for a moment that the characters are experiencing the ups and downs that they're supposed to be experiencing. To be sure, I don't demand that my movies underline and italicize scenes so I know what to feel. My main problem with it is that, considered as a whole, it fails to move me emotionally. In short it's a movie that I understand more than like. I've seen it several times now, so I'm pretty sure it's not just a matter of misunderstanding it on a first viewing. I don't think it's even Scorsese's greatest film - that honour would go to Taxi Driver, one of my Top 10 films - and as films of 1980 go I'd take Ordinary People any day. But I simply fail to understand how it has come to be one of the most beloved movies of all time, including making Roger "Don't-Bullshit-a-Bullshitter" Ebert's list of the ten greatest movies ever. I don't think it's a terrible movie by any stretch of the imagination, and I think it has some very poignant, well-done moments - the colour home video "intermezzo" is actually one of my favorite scenes from all cinema.
